H.A.T. = High-School
Audio Theatre
MY WEBMASTER IS
BAHAA DAUOD, COLLEGE STUDENT
AND CIRCUIT CITY EMPLOYEE
The acronym
H.A.T. was
invented by Bradley
Thunderbird Phoenix
The organization, H.A.T., was founded by
Bradley Thunderbird Phoenix
Do you want a career as a voice actor?
Potential
employers don't want to know what you want to do in life, they want to know what
you've accomplished (experience).
Taking theatre in high school, college,
or getting involved with community theatre is a smart move.
Through workshops, H.A.T. will
introduce high school students to the following:
The art / medium of contemporary AUDIO theater
Classic or radio theatre from the Golden Age of Radio
How to write audio play scripts [What are
the components of audio theatre?]
Voice acting which will help them with oral reports
in class and public speaking
The importance of sound effects in audio (radio) theater and the role
of a "sound-effects artist" or foley artist
Digital editing of dialogue, sound effects, and music to produce a good
audio play or skit
Related careers of audio theater such as performing voices for
audio books, animated characters
for movies, commercials, etc.
Performing audio theater on STAGE at the Babylon Town Annex, for my
public access TV program, and other venues
Perform in recording studios to commit the production(s) to audio CDs (to air on radio stations AND
internet radio)
Perform ORIGINAL scripts of various genres: Twilight Zone-type plays,
suspense, sci-fi, comedy, satire, horror, and DRAMA
Audio theater (also called
RADIO THEATRE) can be performed for
the following venues:
1. On STAGE - the actors stand in front of microphones and
perform (performances can be
videotaped and shown on television or made into
DVDs). The performance(s) should be committed to audio CDs.
2. In recording studios (in order to commit the performance(s) to audio
CDs, audio cassettes, or IPODS.
3. Live over the internet via web-casting.
Internet radio is very practical for audio theatre
productions.
4. Live over the radio airwaves (commercial, public, college, or high
school radio stations).
AUDIO THEATRE
DIFFERS FROM STAGE THEATRE:
Audio theater is one of the most inexpensive forms of theater.
Memorization of scripts is NOT required because you act while READING the
script.
Audio theater is related to audio books and dramatic readings, but
MICROPHONES ARE REQUIRED.
Elaborate costumes and sets are NOT required in audio theater.
Blocking is NOT required.
NOTE: I have
contacted the staff of the Helen Keller National
Center in Sands Point, NY
WHY? Because the blind or
sight-impaired are a logical audience for
what I do best:
AUDIO THEATRE.
The sight-impaired may not be able to SEE a play, but they can HEAR a play
(unless they are both blind and deaf, which
the Helen Keller Nat'l Ctr is well equipped to train them).
I have donated
some of my audio short stories (audio plays) on audio CD to their facility's
library.
My goal is to encourage the public to
make donations to the Helen Keller Services for the Blind.
Help support the Helen Keller
National Center's mission by making
an online donation at

MINI-Review of
"The Man Who Came to Dinner"
(Act Out Theatre production)
by Bradley
Thunderbird Phoenix
Friday, February 10, 2006, 8 pm at 37 West Main Street, the Boulton Center,
Bay Shore, Long Island, NY and
the Act Out Theatre School Teen
Theatre presented: "The Man Who Came To Dinner". Several schools were
represented:
Bay Shore High
School, St. John the Baptist High School, Islip High School, West Islip
High School,
Brentwood's Freshman Center,
Udall Middle School, and
St. Mary's School.
If there was an empty seat
in the Boulton Center that night, I didn't
know about it.
I was so captivated by the story, that
I was
surprised that my watch read 11 pm when I
departed the Boulton Center.
Hats off to the entire cast. Kyle Savage
as Dr. Bradley seem to have a carefree
Marx-Bros. quality to his performance,
which I enjoyed. A special salute to Christopher Tudisco
(Sheridan
Whiteside), Morgan Matthews (Lorraine Sheldon), and
Ian Harvey (Professor Metz & Banjo).
My theatre instincts tell me that Ian Harvey
has a brilliant theatre career ahead
of him). Fine job by
the crew as well. The
credits for the cast & crew are listed
below.
DVDs of this production may still be available. For
further information concerning this DVD, please contact
the Boulton Center
for the Performing Arts at:
www.boultoncenter.org
There was a scene in this
production that was especially interesting to
me and
that was when the characters were in front
of microphones
to "broadcast live" over the radio: audio theater.
With the formation of * HAT (High-School Audio Theatre),
I hope to introduce teenagers as
well as adults to the art form of
contemporary
audio theater (formerly called radio theater)
via workshops at
the following venues: The Bay Shore - Brightwaters Public Library through
Linda Clark,
Children's Librarian),
Adult Education with Eastern BOCES (authorized by
Dr. Robert Doctor), Bay Shore's
YMCA, and
BACCA (Babylon Citizen
Council on the Arts (Babylon Arts Council), Ray Zaccaro,
Executive Director).
Kudos to Robin Harvey, the Production Stage
manager. Congrats to Tiana Christoforidis, the
Director of the
production, who
studied in New York City
at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, Circle in the Square, and HB
Studios.
Mrs. Christoforidis
founded the
Act Out Theatre program at the Great South Bay YMCA
nearly twelve years ago.

The
X-CURSION MEDIA High School Audio Play Contest
I'm gonna post updates
on this website. I wonder, which high school here in
Suffolk
will contact me and say that they are
entering Montage Radio Theatre's Audio Play
Contest? To date, I've contacted over
35 high
schools. All is needed are seven high
schools
and this contest is happening. Who
will it be?
No money will be exchanged by any party. The 1st Place Winner of the audio play contest will receive either a plaque or certificate.
The student director should be appointed by any
one of the following:
The principal, Vice Principal, English Department Chair,
or school official monitoring this theatrical project.
The students do not have to be in a drama club or taking a theatre course. ANY student can participate in this
The student director must select either one scriptwriter
or at least two scriptwriters, but no more than two
scriptwriters
to write the audio play. The student director can ask for
changes in the script or ask for improvisation. The scriptwriters
cannot
consult
with any school official or adult when writing the script.
Resources for scriptwriting: Public libraries
and the web.
The director must e-mail their original script
to X-Cursion Media after the finished product has
been submitted via mail. Spelling and
grammar errors will NOT be checked, but X-Cursion Media needs to
see
the scripts only as proof that the
students participating in the contest wrote the scripts.
The DIRECTOR must select the sound effects and the
music. The MUSIC can be original compositions by the
students,
music in public domain, or existing music you can get written
permission to use. The high
school band in the same
high school can provide music for this theatrical project, but
that is their only function, they cannot do any acting
or provide voices for the project. Only the
cast & crew can perform the voices (exceptions are
screams,
laughter, booing from sound effects CDs, records, or
tapes). Adults and teachers cannot
perform directly in the plays.
You can have the voices of adults from
TV, radio, or speeches only as background voices
to aid the audio play,
for example, three teenagers may be watching
television and having a conversation about their school or their
parents
(you can hear adult's voices in the background via
the TV), but ON MIKE you'll hear the student's dialogue.
NOTE: If adults or teachers work
directly with the students, then they can effect the quality of the
audio play.
This project is for students to write the
scripts, do the technical work, and perform as a
team. The only direct
assistance for adults or teachers is recording
the audio play so that it can be burned onto a CD for
submission. This
is critical, because if you think you're recording
and you hit "play back" and there's nothing
there...it can be a lot of
hours
and
hard work down the tubes! Adults and
teachers can assist in recording, but NOT
in directing the
performances
of the student actors. The student
audio tech(s) must interact with the student
director and the
adult tech in
capturing the audio play on whatever medium before you
convert it into a CD (DAT, reel-to-reel,
audio
cassette,
lap top, hard drive, etc.). The student
audio tech(s) is also responsible for burning
the play into
an audio CD and not a CD rom.
THE AUDIO PLAYS
FOR THIS CONTEST...
The audio plays must have at least three
characters. You can have as many characters as you need.
The audio play cannot be a monologue, it must have 3 or more characters.
The audio play submission cannot be shorter than 10 minutes or longer than 25 minutes.
WHAT WOULD DISQUALIFY A HIGH SCHOOL FROM THE X-CURSION MEDIA CONTEST?
If it's discovered that any adult or teacher helped the students write
the scripts and direct the productions
(the high school students involved in the project must write, perform, and
appoint a director to direct the play).
If it's discovered by X-Cursion Media that during the course of the project,
a physical fight broke out between
any of the students in the cast and crew. Teamwork and
cooperation is very important.
If it's discovered that the audio play presented to X-Cursion
Media was plagiarized.
If the student director of the project is suspended or
expelled by their high school.
(This only applies to the director, since that person must lead, coach, and
motivate the cast & crew).
IF members of the cast & crew are suspended or expelled, the student
director may replace them.
IF the student director is expelled or suspended, then the high school
they represent CANNOT
participate in the X-Cursion Media Audio Play Contest. They are
disqualified.
The "Captain" is responsible for his ship.
Selecting a good student director is very important.
On the honor system, it is expected that the teacher or school official
monitoring this theatre project
will report any incidences to X-Cursion Media that would warrant
disqualification.

DECEMBER 15 -
19, 2005:
Re-established contact with Mr. Cone at
the Smithtown High School. I interviewed Mr. Cone on
my
radio program,"The Montage Radio Arts Magazine" back in March
19, 2001. Mr. Cone talked about
one of his courses which involves radio history, radio plays, and
field trips to the Museum of Television and Radio.
The audio play contest for high schools and junior high schools is an
extracurricular activity and was not intended
to be part of the
curriculum's of the various schools.
* My interview with Mr. Cone
over WUSB - 90.1 FM radio station is archived on audio
cassette.
Any teacher or
school official can request it by e-mail
and I'll send it to them.
